Gail Kendall was raised in a small lumber town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Following her formal education at the University of Michigan (BSD) and Eastern Michigan University (MFA) she spent ten years working as an independent studio artist in St. Paul, Minnesota. In 1987 she accepted a position in the Department of Art & Art History at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where she taught for twenty-four years.

In this two-day workshop, you will learn masterful techniques in coil-building with soft clay for the best structural integrity and elegance. The workshop begins on Friday evening with a walking tour of the famed Burnap Ceramics Collection of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Each participant will be asked to photograph or sketch one or more pieces from the Nelson and then attempt to replicate that artwork over the weekend. Using a historical pot as a guide, we will replicate the organic and fluid way of its creation, freeing us from the challenges inherent to the conceptual/creative process. What is left is learning technical facility so that later when that great idea for a unique creation appears in the mind's eye it can be flawlessly executed.

Technical skills Included will be:
  • Rolling coils (no need to extrude)
  • Growing the form you are copying with ease
  • Refining the surface with scraping, paddling, and darting techniques
  • Using terra sigillatas and stain to surface the pot

Gail Kendall will present her Pot Pointers (short) image lecture and show images from the cultures from which the pots we are copying were made.
