Belger Crane Yard Studios presents Mitchell Spain for our December 2016 Digital Debut! Hand-built from porcelain, Spain's functional work is inspired from personal childhood imagery seen in his rural, Midwestern upbringing. From shot glasses inspired by vintage battery casings to porcelain flasks that look like rusted oil tins, all of his works were precision crafted with the relationship of form and function in mind.

Mitchell Spain was born and raised near Des Moines, Iowa. He received his BFA in Ceramics in 2012 from the University of Iowa and his MFA at the University of Kansas in 2015. Mitchell has exhibited in many national and international exhibitions, including the Zanesville Prize for Contemporary Ceramics, and has appeared multiple times in Ceramics Monthly. Mitchell Spain designs his ceramic works based on a childhood founded in rural and rustic surroundings. Using a trompe l'oeil technique to mimic these surroundings, Mitchell has found success in both his functional and sculptural works. He authored a publication in the November 2014 issue of Ceramics: TECHNICAL magazine on his design of threaded ceramics.
